  • A new 400Kv substation is also planned somewhere along the pylons for the Newchurch scheme to connect to. To be decided by Sec of State for Energy Security.
  • St Mary in the Marsh Solar Farm - 16MW solar panels on 100 acres between Newchurch, Dymchurch and St Mary in the Marsh bordering Shepway Energy Park. Currently in planning with FHDC.
  • Stone Street Solar Park is a 99MW solar park  in Aldington going through DCO planning by the Planning Inspectorate currently.
  • A 35MW Pond Wood Solar project  between Woodchurch and Kenardington  will be submitted to Ashford Borough Council in spring 2025.
  • Dungeness - 500-1000MW solar panels and battery storage across 21 or 2 project sites - not yet public but potentially another 1500-3000 acres.
  • Sellindge - 1000MW

UPDATE

The TEC Register list of projects in the 'grid connection  queue' lists more future energy capacity than the UK actually needs. Following DESNZ's December 2024 'Clean Power 2030' policy announcement it is likely that the list will be reprioritised in  2025 and many projects will be removed. We will keep you up to date here on developments that affect the Marsh locally, positively or negatively.

NSIPs versus Locally-decided projects

NSIPs

Projects over 100MW are called Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects (NSIPs) which go through the national Planning Inspectorate and are decided by the Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ). This typically takes up to 5 years. Local council planning departments can only input into the consultation process.

Locally-decided projects

A further number of smaller solar projects are also proposed for the area including a 16MW solar farm at St Mary in the Marsh and a 35MW project between Woodchurch and Kenardington. This will be decided by FHDC and Ashford  planning departments respectively.
